Dreaming of a Fire Pit? Key Things to Check

A little planning ensures your fire pit is safe, functional and exactly what you imagined for those cozy nights. Think about:

Your ideal location – consider safe clearance from the house, fences, overhanging trees and where seating will go.

The style and size you envision – round or square? Modest or a grand feature? Built-in seating?

Measure the space you have available for the fire pit itself and the surrounding entertaining area.

Having a spot and style in mind helps us design the perfect fit. Ready to create your cosy hub? Talk to us to plan it. See FAQs below for more tips!

Scott says, "Test the Wind Direction"

“Before settling on a fire pit spot, spend some time outside on a typical evening. Where does the breeze usually come from? You want to position the pit so smoke blows away from your main seating area and the house, not towards it. A little observation saves smoky eyes later.”

Fire Pit Facts & Queries

Considering adding a fire pit? Here’s some helpful info.

Are there council regulations about installing fire pits in the Dubbo or the Central West area?

Regulations regarding backyard fire pits (especially solid fuel ones) can vary. Generally, they need to be contained, located a safe distance from boundaries and structures and used responsibly (e.g. not on total fire ban days, ensure smoke doesn’t cause a nuisance). It’s always wise to check specific local council guidelines. We ensure our installations meet safety best practices.

Non-combustible materials are essential directly around and under the fire pit. Compacted gravel, concrete pavers, stone or bricks (similar to those used in some retaining walls) are common choices for the immediate surrounding area — all of which we can supply and install. Grass should be kept well clear. We ensure safe clearances and appropriate base materials during installation.

While we primarily install traditional wood-burning fire pits, incorporating a gas burner setup is possible within a custom-built structure. This requires coordination with a licensed gas fitter for the gas line installation, which we can help facilitate as part of our overall landscaping services.

It depends on the site and fire pit design. Often it involves levelling the area, excavating for a stable base (e.g. gravel or concrete pad) and ensuring proper clearances. This is where having our machinery, like excavators and Bobcats is beneficial for doing the job properly and efficiently.

Maintenance is usually straightforward. Regularly clear out ashes once completely cold. Check for any cracks in masonry or shifting in stones/blocks (like the pavers & blocks we install) over time. If you have a metal insert or bowl, check for rust. Covering the pit when not in use can help prolong its life, primarily through wet weather.
