Planning Your Garden or Path Edging?

Thinking about these points helps clarify what you need for that perfect finishing touch and allows us to suggest the best options.

Measure the total length (in metres) where edging is needed.

Consider the style you prefer – straight lines or curves? What material look appeals to your project? (e.g. concrete, block, timber look)?

Note what the edging will border (e.g. garden bed against lawn, pathway edge, driveway).

Scott says, "Check Your Edging Depth"

“Take a look at your current garden edges. Is the lawn creeping over or under them easily? Often, edging isn’t installed deep enough to stop those determined runners. A good edge needs enough depth (usually 100mm+) to create a proper barrier, saving you constant trimming.”

Edging Essentials - Your Questions Answered

Wondering about the details of landscape edging? Find some answers below.

Can I run my lawn mower right up against the edging?

Yes, especially with flatter profile edging like some pavers and blocks or certain concrete styles laid flush or slightly below lawn level – these essentially act as a ‘mower strip’. Raised or rounded edging might still require some whipper snipping right along the edge for a perfect finish as part of your softscaping routine.

Flexible edging options, like certain types of interlocking plastic or metal edging, are often best for tight curves. Some smaller block or paver types can also be used effectively on gentler curves with careful installation. We can recommend the best fit based on your design.

Depth depends on the edging type and purpose. For separating lawn and garden beds, it needs to be deep enough to prevent grass roots from creeping under (often 100-150mm). Path or driveway edging is usually set into the base material to provide structural support, often coordinated with our paving services.

Quality interlocking edging made from UV-stabilised plastic or durable composites can last for many years. It’s designed to withstand weather conditions. While perhaps not as permanent as concrete or paver edging, it’s a very practical and cost-effective solution for many situations.

Pool coping is the cap or edging installed around the top edge of a swimming pool shell. It provides a safe, non-slip edge for getting in and out, protects the pool structure and creates a neat transition to the surrounding paving or deck. It needs to be durable, water-resistant and comfortable underfoot – often achieved using specific pavers and blocks.
