Want vibrant plants and lush lawns? That’s softscaping – bringing the living elements like turf, plants and soil prep to your landscape. It’s tough getting them to thrive in our climate. But we use climate-smart plants, quality turf and techniques like root directors to ensure your green spaces flourish.
The plants, the lawn, the healthy soil – that’s the ‘living layer’ that really brings your outdoor space to life and makes it feel welcoming, isn’t it? But keeping everything thriving year-round, especially in our Central West climate, definitely takes some know-how and the right plant choices to avoid disappointment.
McNamara Landscaping & Softfall offers comprehensive softscaping services designed for local success. We handle it all, from thorough soil prep and mulching for water retention to planting climate-savvy species suited to our area (from small shrubs to impressive 100L trees!). We also lay beautiful, durable turf (real Kikuyu, Buffalo, Couch or synthetic options) and even use clever techniques like installing root directors to prevent future pavement damage.
Let us help you create a gorgeous green space that doesn’t just survive but truly thrives, adding beauty and enjoyment to your everyday life.

Considering these points helps us recommend the best plants and turf for a beautiful, thriving and manageable landscape:
Measure the approximate area(s) you want planted or turfed.
Observe how much sun or shade these specific areas receive during a typical day (e.g. full sun, morning sun only, mostly shade).
Think about how much ongoing maintenance you're comfortable with (e.g. you prefer very low maintenance and are happy to do some gardening).
Pre-thinking about this info helps us plan a garden that loves living here! Ready for a greener yard? Talk to us about your ideas. Find more tips in the FAQs below!
“Before choosing plants, spend a day noting where the sun hits your garden beds and for how long. Full sun all day? Morning sun only? Mostly shade? Knowing the exact light conditions in different spots is important for selecting plants that thrive in their environments.”

It means selecting species that are naturally adapted to our conditions: hot summers, cold winters and variable rainfall. Think natives and other drought-tolerant varieties that require less supplementary watering once established, especially when paired with efficient irrigation systems. It also means grouping plants with similar water needs together (‘hydrozoning’).
Root directors (or root barriers) are physical barriers installed vertically in the ground around trees planted near paths, driveways, pipes, or foundations. They guide roots downwards, preventing them from growing laterally and causing costly damage to surrounding pavers and blocks or other hardscaping as the tree matures. Essential for larger trees in tight spots!
Each has its pros! Kikuyu is vigorous and repairs quickly but can be invasive. Buffalo varieties (like Sir Walter) are shade-tolerant, soft and generally low-allergenic. Couch grasses are very drought and heat-tolerant but need full sun. We can recommend the best fit based on your site’s sun exposure, traffic levels and desired look/feel. We also offer quality synthetic options, often used in children’s play areas.
A 100-litre tree is quite established, typically several metres tall already, providing instant impact. Planting trees this size requires careful handling, proper excavation, soil preparation, staking for stability and initial watering schedules to ensure successful establishment. But don’t worry, we can handle it all.
While our main focus is landscape construction and installation (our core landscaping services), we do offer property maintenance services, including seasonal garden care like pruning, fertilising and tidying up. However, regular large-scale lawn mowing is not a primary focus. We can discuss tailored maintenance options if needed.
